ATENEO de Manila made it five straight wins in the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament with a 25-8, 22-25, 25-16, 25-10 victory over Adamson University on Wednesday at the Arena in San Juan.
The Lady Eagles tightened their hold on the No. 1 spot, improving their win-loss record to 5-1 spot and widening the gap from idle La Salle, Far Eastern University and University of Sto. Tomas, in joint second at 4-2.
Ateneo closes out its first round on Saturday against National University (1-4).
Ponggay Gaston played her best UAAP game, finishing with 16 points off 10 kills and six service aces.
Kat Tolentino had 10 attacks, four blocks and an ace for 15 points, while graduating middle blocker Bea De Leon added 14 markers.
Deanna Wong dished out 29 excellent sets on top of 18 digs and four hits, while libero Kim Gequillana had 24 digs and 10 excellent receptions.
“We don't want to be out of focus coming into the game. Sobrang kaunti lang ng pahinga namin, so we really had to work hard right away and set our goals and mindset,” said coach Oliver Almadro, lauding the Lady Eagles for scoring another big win just three days after beating UP.
“I really admire my players in their sacrifices and their hard work. They really have to study pa, tapos mage-ensayo pa kami so hindi madali ang ginagawa nila. I admire my players.”
Eli Soyud was the lone player to score in double digits scorer for the Lady Falcons with 13 points.
Joy Dacoron and Chiara Permentilla added nine markers each, while libero Thang Ponce had 45 digs and 16 excellent receptions.
Adamson suffered its second straight defeat under new coach Onyok Getigan dropping to 1-5, tied at the bottom with University of the East.
The Lady Falcons next face the Lady Maroons.
