UNIVERSITY of the East finally scored its first victory and kept Adamson University winless, 20-25, 28-26, 25-23, 25-22, on Wednesday in the UAAP Season 81 women’s volleyball tournament at the Arena in San Juan.
Open spiker Judith Abil delivered 22 points, all from attacks, while making 21 excellent receptions and 20 digs for UE.
Mean Mendrez, who played through pain in her right shoulder, scored 14 points as the Lady Red Warriors improved their win-loss record to 1-2.
Geline Olarve also scored 14, Seth Rodriguez had 12 points, while Libero Kath Arado made 39 digs and 28 excellent receptions.
“Siguro after game namin versus NU, nag-collapse. parang hindi kami ang nag-laro noon. Sinabi ko na lang sa kanila, mag-laro lang kayo ng maayos, hindi naman natin kailangan ma-pressure,” said UE head coach Karl Dimaculangan.
“Hindi porke't nag-improve tayo, automatic panalo na. Malaking bagay ito sa amin reward nila ito sa sarili nila na nakakuha na kami ng panalo.“
UE overcame 34 errors to get a win and tie National University and Far Eastern University at fifth.
The Lady Red Warriors face Ateneo (2-1) on Sunday at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
Eli Soyud scored 20 and Bern Flora added 15 points, while making 17 digs and 17 excellent receptions for Adamson, alone at the bottom with a 0-3 record.
The Lady Falcons face NU (1-2) on Sunday.
