FAR Eastern University recovered from a wobbly start, beating rookie-laden National University, 22-25, 25-19, 25-19, 25-12, to jumpstart its UAAP Season 81 women’s volleyball tournament campaign on Saturday at the Arena in San Juan.
Last year’s silver medalists, Lady Tamaraws, squandered a 21-14 first set lead, allowing the Lady Bulldogs to unleash an 11-1 run and steal the opening frame behind Joyme Cagande, Roselyn Doria and Ivy Lacsina.
NU’s rookie setter Cagande left the match when she suffered a left knee sprain after colliding with Doria late in the third set. She never returned.
FEU rookie Lycha Ebon, from Davao, made an impressive debut, scoring 13 off nine spikes and four service aces.
“Happy po ako kasi first time ko pong mag-UAAP tapos panalo pa,” FEU rookie Lycha Ebon said. “Kanina, iniisip ko na lang po 'yung mga tinuro sa amin ni coach. Kasi 'yun 'yung parati niyang sinasabi na sundin niyo lang, at mananalo tayo.”
Lacsina scored 14, Princess Robles added 13 points, while Cagande had 15 excellent sets and two service aces before getting injured.
NU will try to bounce back against UE on Saturday next week.
