ROOKIE libero Jennifer Nierva vows to be the source of positivity and energy for National University regardless of the outcome of their UAAP Season 81 women’s volleyball campaign.
Last Wednesday, the four-time UAAP girls’ champion from Nazareth School couldn’t hide her frustrations and shed tears as the Lady Bulldogs suffered a three-set defeat to De La Salle — their third straight loss.
But the 19-year-old volleybelle realized she can’t be too emotional as the backbone of NU’s floor defense.
“After that, naisip ko ang drama. Dapat ‘di ako kailangan umiyak noon,” Nierva said. “Binago ko agad na sabi ko kailangan happy ako this game kasi wala naman mawawala sa akin.”
True enough, Nierva not only did a tremendous job protecting NU’s floor with 44 digs and 33 excellent receptions, but was also full of optimism that helped the Lady Bulldogs end their three-game skid with a 28-26, 30-32, 25-21, 25-22 victory over Adamson that kept them in Final Four race on Sunday at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
“Ako kasi before mag-start ng game, my goal is to be the source of positivity, source of energy, happiness. Since ako yung libero, kailangan stable ako,” the rookie libero expressed after their important win.
“Napatunayan ko pag happy o pag nag-eenjoy ka lang sa game, it will naturally come out kung ano ang performance mo and madadala mo ‘yung iba kasi pag emotional ka, napipigilan mo ‘yung sarili mo to perform the best na makaya mo,” she added.
Nierva is grateful to their head coach Norman Miguel for bringing out the best in her and the rest of the Lady Bulldogs, bannered by rookies Ivy Lacsina and Princess Robles.
“I wanna credit din si coach Norman kasi talagang nilalabas niya ‘yung full potential ng bawat isa, ‘yung creativity niya as a coach – na para matulungan kami manalo,” she said. “And sa mga team mates ko na inaccept ‘yung role nila na [kahit may] changes, ginagawa pa rin nila ‘yung best nila para makatulong sa team na manalo.”
NU is still in the hunt for a Final Four spot with a 3-7 win-loss record at No. 6. But regardless of what will happen in their remaining four matches, Nierva promises to make the most of their rookie season together with her young teammates.
“It’s a great experience talaga to be here, to play with these young ladies (teammates) here and maganda itong experience na madadala namin sa next season,” Nierva said.
