IVY Lacsina delivered the clutch hits in the fifth set before Gelina Luceño scored the game-winning block on Tots Carlos as National University added to the woes of University of the Philippines, 25-17, 14-25, 17-25, 25-23, 17-15, in the UAAP Season 81 women’s volleyball tournament on Wednesday at the Arena in San Juan City.
Down two sets to one and 14-10 in the fifth set, Lacsina led the Lady Bulldogs’ 5-0 run to reach match point before Isa Molde forced another deuce.
Lacsina nailed another strong cross court hit before Luceño denied Carlos’s attack that ended the three-game skid of NU and sent UP to back-to-back losses.
NU rookie Princess Robles topped the scoring with 17 points built on 10 attacks and seven service aces laced up with 21 excellent receptions. Lacsina delivered 12 kills and four blocks for 16 hits, while seniors Paran and Roselyn Doria added 12 markers each.
Rookie libero Jennifer Nierva manned the Lady Bulldogs’ floor with 29 excellent receptions and 26 digs, while setter Joni Chavez had 26 excellent sets on top of 22 digs and seven points as NU improved with a 2-4 win-loss record before closing out the first round against the surging top seed Ateneo (5-1) on Saturday.
“Sa amin naman, every match, lagi ko po iniinstill sa kanila ‘yung principle lang ng enjoy the game, nothing to lose, enjoy pero hindi ma-compromise ‘yung focus, and always mag-smile,” said NU head coach Norman Miguel. “No pressure at all because alam namin noong pinasok namin ‘yung season na ito, lahat ng struggles. Di ko rin ma-explain ano nangyari sa game kanina. Tiniyaga lang, ienjoy.”
UP was trying to close out the win in the fourth set holding a precarious 21-18 lead from Justine Dorog’s back-to-back hit but Robles and Lacsina delivered five straight points followed by Isa Molde’s attack error to reach set point, 24-22, before Molde saved a point only for her teammate Jessma Ramos committed a crucial service error that allowed NU to force a decider.
NU committed 42 errors way more than UP’s 30 miscues but the Lady Bulldogs were on target from the service line nailing 15 aces in the match, nine coming from their huge first set win.
Carlos led the Lady Maroons with 15 points to go with 25 digs and seven excellent receptions. Dorog, who’s celebrating her 21st birthday, also scored 15 hits including 17 digs, while Isa Molde added 13 markers.
UP suffered another blow coming off a three-set loss to Ateneo as it dropped 3-3 at fifth place before facing Adamson (1-5) on Sunday.
