UNIVERSITY of the Philippines asserted its pre-season mastery of Far Eastern University with a 25-18, 20-25, 25-22, 25-20 win in the UAAP Season 81 women’s volleyball tournament on Wednesday at the Arena in San Juan City.
Tots Carlos showed the way with 15 points off 12 kills as the Lady Maroons won their second straight game to take the early league lead. It was also their first win over the Lady Tamaraws since 2014.
Justine Dorog contributed 12 points on nine spikes, a pair of service aces and a block while Isa Molde had 11 markers and 17 digs for the Lady Maroons, who also beat FEU in their preseason matches in both the PVL and PSL.
“I said it on Saturday that nothing comes easy. The game was so hard. But we fought until the last minute,” said UP head coach Godfrey Okumu.
“FEU is a good team. They keep on changing tactics, so you go with this plan, you find in between the game that they will change it. And that's what gives us a lot of challenge from the position of where they're gonna sub, to how they're going to execute.“
UP will be looking for its third win against University of Santo Tomas (1-1) on Sunday at 2 p.m.
After three hard-fought sets, the Lady Maroons reached match point at 24-16 after Ayel Estrañero’s service ace. Celine Domingo’s pair of spikes and Jerrili Malabanan‘s block including a net touch from Aie Gannaban trimmed the lead down to four before Molde closed out the win with a winner.
Lycha Ebon led the Lady Tamaraws with 16 points to go with 10 digs and seven excellent receptions, while Domingo added 11 markers as FEU dropped to 1-1 record in a tie with Ateneo and UST.
The Lady Tamaraws try to bounce back against the Lady Eagles also on Sunday at 4 p.m.
