WHILE volleyball is a game of size just as it’s a game of skill, University of Sto. Tomas team captain Detdet Pepito believes it’s heart over height which matters most.

This comes after the young UST side with roughly an average height of 5-foot-8 cut La Salle’s ‘Taft towers’ to size in five sets to remain unscathed and deal the defending champs their first prelims loss for the second straight season.
“Talagang gusto namin na may mapatunayan kami this season na hindi lang talaga height ‘yung kailangan sa volleyball para manalo. Para sa’kin, napakita namin na mas malaki talaga ‘yung puso namin this game and for this season,” said Pepito, the Tigresses’ 5-foot-2 libero-captain.
Picking up the pieces
When UST took a 2-0 set lead, La Salle had a champion’s response with two audacious set wins to force the final tiebreak.
Pepito did admit that the Tigresses were ‘lost’ after such strong a start against no less than the champs, but it was how they were able to remind themselves of what they’re capable of as a unit and more.
“Nu’ng third and fourth (set), talagang nawala po kami. Nire-remind ko lang sila kung ano ba talaga ‘yung goal namin, bakit kami naglalaro, at bakit kami nanalo ng two sets.
“Hindi ko masasabi na talagang kulang pa rin sa experience ‘yung team na ‘to [pero] sana itong laro na ‘to, marami kaming na-gain at ma-improve lalo sa mga next games namin,” Pepito said.
“Sabi nga namin na labanan talaga ‘to ng kung sinong [mas gustong] manalo. Mas gusto naming manalo this time,” she added.
