FEU could not go higher than No. 4 in the semifinal seedings but Heather Guino-o made sure to still give the Lady Tamaraws a lift.
The graduating wing spiker scored a career-high 24 points to lift FEU to a huge five-set win over defending champion La Salle on the final day of eliminations, earning the Chooks to Go-Collegiate Press Corps UAAP Player of the Week citation.
Guino-o was picked over Chiara Permentilla of Adamson, Sisi Rondina of University of Santo Tomas, Kat Tolentino of Ateneo and Jolina Dela Cruz of La Salle by beat writers from broadsheets, tabloids and sports websites.
It was a big boost for FEU, which finally won over La Salle after eight losses, as they prepare for the semifinals against top seed Ateneo.
“Para sa amin hindi siya no-bearing,” Guino-o said. “Malaking tulong nitong game na ito kapag nanalo kami para sa mga next po naming games. Kasi makakaboost po ito ng morale namin.”
“Sobrang importante tsaka sobrang halaga kasi ayun nga sobrang eager kami na makuha ‘to kasi ang tagal na namin silang hindi natatalo tsaka it’s time naman na ipakita namin na kaya din namin silang matalo,” she added.
FEU kept La Salle from claiming the No. 2 spot, and the Lady Spikers will battle the University of Sto. Tomas Tigresses in a playoff for the twice-to-beat advantage.
“Hindi ko naman naiisip yung points talaga, ang naiisip ko kung ano yung makakapagpanalo sa team, kung ano yung makakapagpaboost sa mga teammates ko ng kumpiyansa nila,” said Guino-o, who averaged 12.8 points per game in the elimination round.
“Sobrang eager kami matalo yung Ateneo lalo na po may twice-to-beat advantage sila kailangan talaga namin manalo para makuha namin yung pinaka main goal namin,” Guino-o said.
