UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas secured at least a playoff for Final Four berth and put University of the Philippines on the brink of elimination with a 25-21, 25-12, 26-24 win in the UAAP Season 81 women’s volleyball tournament at the Arena in San Juan.
Graduating spiker Sisi Rondina had 20 points built on 17 spikes, two service aces and a block as UST improved its win-loss record to 8-4 to join Far Eastern University in third place.
Ateneo leads with a 10-1 record followed by La Salle at 8-3.
UP is in fifth, but with an 6-6 record their fate in the Final Four is already out of the lady Maroons’ hands.
Rookie Eya Laure delivered the game-winning block on Marian Buitre that completed a comeback from a 20-23 deficit in the third set.
Laure finished with 11 points, Dimdim Pacres scored nine and KC Galdones added eight.
“Again, masaya kasi total team effort ang nangyari. Kita n’yo ang palitan namin ng tao, buti na lang puro tama ang palit namin,” said UST coach Kungfu Reyes. “Buti na lang every substitution namin nagko-contribute ng maayos yung tao namin especially yung last four points namin.”
The Tigresses battle the Lady Tamaraws for a semifinal spot on Sunday at the MOA Arena.
Marian Buitre led the way for UP with 16 points. Tots Carlos had 10 points and made 17 digs and 11 excellent receptions, while Isa Molde played the whole match but was limited to only five markers.
