UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas knocked University of the East out of the Final Four race with a 25-20, 25-20, 25-16 victory on Saturday in UAAP Season 81 women’s volleyball tournament at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Coming off a four-set loss to La Salle last week, the Tigresses regained their winning ways with rookie Ysa Jimenez playing her best UAAP game to back Sisi Rondina and Eya Laure.
Jimenez put up 10 points from six attacks, three service aces and a block as UST scored its seventh win in 11 matches.
UE suffered its ninth loss in 11 outings.
Laure had 14 points, 13 digs and eight excellent receptions, while Rondina delivered 11 hits and 15 digs.
Coach Kungfu Reyes was glad the Tigresses did well to handle the Lady Warriors, who have put up impressive performances against contenders FEU and UP.
"Si UE kasi may threat. Any moment na magbigyan mo lang ng kaunting momentum para sa kanila kakainin ka ng buhay ni UE,” said Reyes. “Ina-analyze nga namin sa past few games nila nakailan silang five sets, kung natapos nila ng maayos yun baka sila pa ang nasa itaas.”
UST also drew contributions from rookie KC Galdones, who had eight points, while MaFe Galanza had 26 excellent sets on top of four markers.
The Tigresses face the UP Lady Maroons on Wednesday at the Arena in San Juan.
Judith Abil was the lone Lady Red Warrior in double figures with 11 points while also making 15 excellent receptions and eight digs. Libero Kath Arado had 21 digs and 12 excellent receptions.
UE takes on Adamson (1-9) on Saturday next week also at the Big Dome.
