EYA Laure outshone her former high school rivals as University of Santo Tomas defeated National University, 26-24, 25–17, 23-25, 25-17, on Saturday for its first back-to-back wins in the UAAP Season 81 women’s volleyball tournament at the Arena in San Juan.
Backed by veterans Sisi Rodina and Dimdim Pacres, rookie Tigress Laure got a big win over the Lady Bulldogs squad featuring former UAAP girls champions Ivy Lacsina and Princess Robles.
Laure scored 20 points on 19 attacks and a service ace as the Tigresses scored their second straight win, joining La Salle in third spot at 4-2, behind idle University of the Philippines and Ateneo at 3-1.
Rondina had 16 points and 10 excellent receptions, while Pacres, who got the starting spot with Milena Alessandrini out injured, had 12 hits to go with 15 digs.
“Maganda na kasi nananalo na kami pero again, yung laro, back to back na panalo, malaking bagay samin lalo na’t hugot namin ‘to para kay Milena,” UST head coach Kungfu Reyes said. “Importante morale ng mga bata, naka recover na kami dun kung san kami na disgrasya.”
“Good indication na pasok na kami sa sistema na gusto na naming mangyari. Patitibayin pa namin especially bench para alalay sa dalawang katabi ko ngayon,” he added.
UST will wrap up its first round against University of the East (1-5) on Sunday next week.
The Espanya-based squad failed to end the match in three sets as it squandered a 23-21 third set lead allowing Robles to score three out of NU’s 4-0 run to force another set. The Tigresses fought back from 12-19 deficit in the frame as Laure led the 9-2 run capped by her three cross court tie the set, 21-all.
The Tigresses caught fire in the fourth set mounting a formidable 21-10 spread and never looked back to win in one hour and 57 minutes.
Robles and Lacsina led NU with 14 points each but suffered their fourth loss in five games at the expense of their high school rival Laure. Audrey Paran added 10 markers including 12 digs.
The Lady Bulldogs (1-4) battle UP Lady Maroons (3-1) on Wednesday.
