BEATEN but unbowed.
University of Santo Tomas rookie sensation Eya Laure refused to give up despite sustaining a left ankle sprain in the 24-26, 25-14, 21-25, 15-25 defeat to Ateneo in Game Two of the best-of-three finals series of the UAAP Season 81 women’s volleyball tournament on Wednesday at the MOA Arena.
The season Rookie of the Year even granted some photo ops after the loss and made fun of her unpolished toes.
“Ano ba ‘yan makikita niyo pa itong paa ko, hindi ako nakapagpa-nail polish,” she said as her left foot was left exposed.
But turning serious, Laure said that there’s no reason to fret and insisted that she and the Tigresses will bounce back for Game Three on Saturday.
“Para sa akin, pagsubok lang ‘to na dapat lagpasan para manalo, pagsubok lang ‘to na dapat malagpasan para makamit ‘yung gusto mong makuha,” she said.
“And for me naman babangon at babangon talaga kami and hindi ako susuko ng ganun-ganon lang,” she added.
Although it was painful, Laure bared that the pain of seeing her team lose is what made her shed tears when she was benched late in the match.
“Noong nilabas ako kanina, hindi ako makapaniwala na nilalabas ako kasi sabi ko sa sarili ko kahit anong mangyari sa championship na ‘to gagawin ko talaga lahat,” she said.
After an awkward landing on her left ankle right at the start of the third set, Laure was rushed to the locker room as her father Eddie carried her in his arms.
She got back at the bench with Ateneo leading, 20-18, in the third set, and she returned to the game, replacing Dimdim Pacres with, 21-19, still the Lady Eagles ahead.
Eya still had 10 points in the match, built on seven attacks, one block and two service aces.
