THREE-time defending champion La Salle goes for its second straight win as it takes on Adamson University in the UAAP Season 81 women's volleyball tournament on Saturday at the Arena in San Juan.
Coming off a four-set win over archrival Ateneo, the Lady Spikers try to join early leaders University of the Philippines Lady Maroons.
The Lady Spikers face the Lady Falcons at 4 p.m.
Opening weekend losers University of the East and National University clash at 2 p.m.
Desiree Cheng was brilliant as expected, while Jolina de la Cruz came up with a solid debut in the big win over Ateneo.
Coach Ramil de Jesus said the Lady Spikers actually gained an edge by avoiding preseason tournaments.
“Malaking advantage 'yun. Wala silang idea doon sa team namin, kung sino yung starter, kung ano yung posisyon, and kung anong klaseng set play yung nangyayari sa team sa practice namin,” said De Jesus.
The Lady Falcons, meanwhile, try to bounce back from a five-set loss to University of Sto. Tomas.
Coach Air Padda said facing the titleholders early in the season will help the Lady Falcons with their intensity.
“I'm happy we're playing La Salle. I think it's going to push us to not be relaxed ever. And now we have a bar to set now,” Padda said.
“Like playing the tough teams is going to force us to step up our defense early and step our offense up. I'd much rather them to play right now than to play in the middle of the season.”
Padda banks on Eli Soyud, Bern Flora, Chiara Permentilla, Joy Dacoron, Krich Macaslang, rookie setter Nikka Yandoc and libero Thang Ponce as they try to stop the Lady Spikers.
The Lady Bulldogs are without rookie setter Joyme Cagande, who tore her ACL in the opener. Kly Orillaneda and libero-turned-setter Joni Chavez are expected to take charge as playmakers for the team featuring rookie hitters Ivy Lacsina and Princess Robles as they take on the Lady Red Warriors, bannered by libero Kath Arado and spikers Me-ann Mendrez and Judith Abil.
