FOR the Lady Eagles, Deanna Wong's fine plays set the tone for the quick work against an out of sorts Far Eastern University.
The 5-foot-7 setter delivered 30 of Ateneo's 33 excellent sets, while also making 12 digs on top of her four points as she set the table for the Katipunan spikers in the blowout on Wednesday in the UAAP Season 81 women's volleyball tournament.
Kat Tolentino had 11 points, and credited Wong for Ateneo’s smooth offense.
"It was a great team effort and I really saw how Deanna really distributed the ball well and that’s how our team should play," said
"That’s how we win because we were able to win with confidence, win convincingly and I think we did and it shows in the way we were able to finish in three sets."
Wong says the figures are the least of her concerns.
"Actually, it’s not in my head how many excellent sets I get. The team, it’s the win talaga," she said after guiding Ateneo to its ninth straight victory to secure at least a playoff for a Final Four spot at 9-1.
She continued: "Kahit anong receive or dig na mapunta sa akin, I do para ma-set sa players. As coach O says, get to the ball all the time and I’ll always be there for the team. What I have na excellent sets, it’s because of my spikers."
As good as Wong has been this season, what she wants to see is a collective improvement from the team from top to bottom.
"I think we're all improving naman as a team, not just me," said Wong, the league's third best setter. "As long as we stick together naman, we're always gonna challenge ourselves."
It’s what coach Oliver Almadro has been preaching all year long.
"I always tell them great teams will push us forward. And that's why we're winning, with how everybody pushes each other up," he said.
