BELLA Belen, the UAAP’s first women’s volleyball rookie-MVP back in National University’s title-clinching Season 84 sweep, made one thing clear about the current crop of Lady Bulldogs in the midst of their five-game winning run.
NU is no ‘star factory.’
Belen: No star in the team
“We’re really happy kasi nakita namin na lahat ay kayang mag-contribute sa team and ‘yung team naman namin, we’re not building a star player kasi talaga,” said Belen.
“Gusto namin lahat kami paangat, gusto namin walang naiiwan.”
Since a stunning season-opener loss to still-unbeaten University of Sto. Tomas, NU head coach Norman Miguel is pleased to see the Lady Bulldogs take cautious yet much-needed strides as their title-reclamation bid runs its course.
NU peaking at the right time
In simpler terms, for Miguel, NU is peaking at the right time — and possibly at the best time ahead of its championship rematch with La Salle to close out the first round of preliminaries.
“Very careful kami kung paano umaangat ‘yung performance ng team namin na nasa tamang timing. We always check their physical conditioning kasi importante ‘yun eh, ‘yung katawan, so adjust sa load ng skills training,” said Miguel.
“Slowly starting pa rin kami sa pag-angat, hindi yung biglaan [dahil] mahaba po kasi ‘yung season. Mahirap na po if bigla kaming nag-peak so dinadahan-dahan namin.”
