ATENEO eyes its third straight win it faces University of the East on Sunday in the UAAP Season 81 women’s volleyball tournament at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
After an opening-day loss, the Lady Eagles made it back-to-back wins and look to extend the streak at 2 p.m. against the Lady Red Warriors, who are coming off a four-set win over the Adamson Lady Falcons.
The Lady Eagles took down contenders UST Tigresses and FEU Lady Tamaraws in their past two games, recovering from a four-set loss to titleholder La Salle.
“I guess the La Salle game was a wake-up call for us,” Lady Eagles coach Oliver Almadro said.
Ateneo eyes a share of the lead with La Salle and University of the Philippines, both at 3-1 after the Lady Maroons’ big win over the defending champion Lady Spikers on Saturday.
The Lady Eagles count on Bea de Leon and Maddie Madayag to lead the way against the Lady Red Warriors, who are tied for sixth at 1-2 with the National University Lady Bulldogs.
“There will always be pressure,” said Almadro. “But again, the challenge should be turned into blessings. Because if we have games like these, we will keep on learning and mas titibay pa yung heart namin.”
UE coach Karl Dimaculangan will again lean on Judith Abil, who had a 20-20-20 stat line against the lowly Lady Falcons, as the Lady Warriors try to make it back-to-back wins.
“Yung panalo namin ngayon is confidence (booster) namin, na for the next games, hopefully makakuha ulit kami ng panalo,” said the rookie coach.
“One game at a time lang kami. Kasi for the several years nga, nasa bottom sila. Kailangan ma-develop lang yung attitude, yung mentality nila na kailangan panalo.”
Adamson, meanwhile, will have new coach Onyok Getigan calling the shots against rookie-laden NU at 4 p.m.
Getigan, coach of Baby Falcons and Kings’ Montessori team, was tapped to replace Air Padda after the Lady Falcons’ 0-3 start. Padda is still part of the team as conditioning coach.
