ATENEO seeks to claim the top spot, while La Salle looks to secure a twice-to-beat advantage in the semifinals as the Lady Eagles and Lady Spikers take on separate foes on Sunday in the UAAP Season 81 women’s volleyball tournament at the Arena in San Juan.
Assured of a twice-to-beat advantage with an 11-2 win-loss record, the Lady Eagles gun for the best record as they face also-ran University of the East (3-10) at 2 p.m. on the final day of eliminations.
If Ateneo secures the top spot, it will take on No. 4 Far Eastern University in the Final Four next weekend.
Coach Oliver Almadro said he is not thinking of the Final Four yet, urging the Lady Eagles to finish strong and not take the Lady Red Warriors lightly.
“We don’t think kung sino nasa Final Four at wala,” said Almadro, who banks on Kat Tolentino, Maddie Madayag, Bea de Leon and Deanna Wong.
UE was eliminated early but is looking to score a big win in its final match of the season and give graduating players Kath Arado, Judith Abil, Lai Bendong and Roselle Baliton a fitting sendoff.
Titleholder La Salle (10-3), meanwhile, takes on last year’s runner-up FEU at 4 p.m.
A win will give the Lady Spikers a twice-to-beat incentive in the semifinals.
No. 3 University of Sto. Tomas (10-4) is still in the running for the No. 2 spot. A La Salle loss will result in a tie for second with UST and a playoff for the twice-to-beat advantage. Lance Agcaoili
