LOURDES Clemente is keeping cool as she waits for confirmation if she has successfully completed the big jump from NCAA to UAAP.
After earning her Tourism degree at Perpetual Help and playing four seasons with the Lady Altas in the NCAA, Clemente is pursuing a Masters degree at La Salle and a spot in the Lady Spikers UAAP squad.
Clemente, a former NCAA Best Blocker, has been training with the three-time defending champions Lady Spikers, seeking to play one season in the UAAP.
The deadline of submission for eligibility is on Monday next week, January 28 followed by a screening on February 5 before the approval of the UAAP board on Feb. 11.
“Hopefully makapasok ako this coming UAAP. For me kasi, sino ba namang aayaw sa DLSU. Siyempre, academics pa lang and at the same time yung volleyball nila talagang nasa taas e,” said Clemente, who watched the Lady Altas’ NCAA Season 94 Final Four match against top seed College of Saint Benilde on Tuesday.
“Siyempre kahit naman gustuhin mo kung di naman pwede. Hintayin muna natin 'yung lineup.”
The 6-foot-2 middle blocker said she was eyeing a transfer to La Salle when she was still in first year at Perpetual Help but it didn’t push through. She had a chance to discuss the transfer with De Jesus when she played for F2 Logistics in the Philippine Superliga.
“Kinakausap niya ako pagkagraduate ko daw punta ako. Hindi ko naman in-expect na magkakaroon pa ako ng isa pang playing year,” she said. “Sa akin, grab na lang 'yung opportunity kasi blessing din.”
UE Athletic Director Rod Roque, who is part of the UAAP board and league’s eligibility committee, said there is a chance Clemente will be cleared in the screening.
“Kapag masteral tapos galing ka sa ibang school walang residency, ready to play,” Roque said last week. “Pero kung galing ka sa ibang UAAP school, magma-masteral ka sa another UAAP school then one year residency. Pero si Lourdes wala siya, qualified siya.”
