UNIVERSITY of the Philippines took advantage of University of Santo Tomas’ porous defense to score a 26-24, 23-25, 25-20, 25-17 win on Wednesday, its first in the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.
Skipper Nicole Tiamzon scored 19 points including five points down the stretch, while last year’s best blocker Kathy Bersola added 16 and Angeli Araneta chipped in 14 to lead the Lady Maroons to a win after starting the season with two losses.
“They deserve to win,” said UP coach Gerry Yee. “Lahat naman sila nagsisipag.”
UP came up with a 4-0 run to snatch the lead, 12-9, in the fourth. Ria Meneses and Chloe Cortez answered with back-to-back hits for UST but UP came up with a 12-4 blast for a 20-14 spread.
“First game namin forgettable, second game namin we try to show na iba na kami unlike before na hindi marunong magfinish off ng game,” said Yee.
“Kaya I told them kayo na ang mag decide kung kailan niyo gusto manalo. And today we bounced back,” he added.
UP is now tied at 1-2 with UST, Adamson and National University. Defending champion Ateneo and La Salle are on top with 3-0 records, while Far Eastern University is alone in third at 2-1.
UST led, 9-2, in the second set before UP used an 11-2 run to take control, 19-15. EJ Laure managed to lift the Tigresses and even the match at one set apiece, but UP proved too much in the next two sets.
Laure finished with 19 points, while Tigresses skipper Pam Lastimosa had 13.
