POWERHOUSE La Salle made University of the East pay for a sluggish performance, scoring a quick 25-6, 25-17, 25-17 rout on Wednesday in the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at the MOA Arena.
With the Lady Warriors offering token resistance, the Taft-based Lady Spikers cruised to their 11th victory in 12 matches, keeping them close behind unbeaten league leader and archrival Ateneo (12-0). UE remained winless in 12 tries.
La Salle’s offense was firing on all cylinders and setter Kim Fajardo had a grand time teeing up various spikers to leave the UE defense, which at the outset was slow to react, flat footed.
Fajardo even caught the Lady Warriors napping, coming up a rally-stopper in the second by tossing the ball deep for one of her five points.
She also scored on two blocks and twice from the service line, but what earned her the player of the match honors was the 28 excellent sets.
UE got things going early in third set, somehow managing to keep the score tight when La Salle looked to have relaxed a bit and lost some of the power behind their hits, resulting in long rallies.
But the Lady Spikers quickly regrouped and after 11-all, broke away from the tight contest and finished it in an hour and 10 minutes.
A powerful Mika Reyes hit to center positioned La Salle at match point and Laizah Bendong’s serve sailed long to hand La Salle victory.
Reyes and skipper Ara Galang registered 10 points each, while Cyd Demecillo had nine.
No one fro UE scores in double figures, with Angelica Dacaymat coming up with nine.
