AN intact Ateneo squad proved too much for a National University side that is now without its biggest stars as Alyssa Valdez scored 28 points to power the Lady Eagles to a 25-21, 25-18, 25-15 victory in their UAAP women’s volleyball season opener on Saturday at the MOA Arena.
Valdez scored on 20 spikes, two blocks and six service aces as the Lady Eagles needed just an hour and 19 minutes to seal the win against an NU side that is now without towering Dindin Santiago and the ever-reliable Mina Aganon.
“Hindi namin ine-expect na ganoon kadali ang game, nagkataon lang na maganda ang laro ng lahat kaya maganda ang result,” said Valdez, the reigning MVP.
“Unlike kasi last year clueless kami sa lalaruin namin, so from last year doon kami kumuha ng experience and now matagal na rin kami nagsama as a team so nag-jell na kami,” added the pride of San Juan, Batangas.
The Katipunan-based spikers took control of the game right from the start and the Lady Bulldogs, now led by the young Jaja Santiago, were never able to get things going.
The closest NU could get was at 12-all in the third set.
“Sabi nga ng matatanda, maganda lang ang gising,” said Valdez. “Sana every game ganoon kasi lahat naman gusto ‘yun we hope na all throughoutng season ganoon, pero every game meron pa rin ‘yan challenges.”
The Lady Eagles and University of Santo Tomas share the early lead.
Santiago scored 16 points for NU, while Myla Pablo had 10.
