ADAMSON University defeated skidding University of Santo Tomas, 25-17, 15-25, 25-20, 25-20, on Saturday for its third straight win in the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.

Amanda Villanueva and Mylene Paat led the attack with 15 points apiece, while Jessica Galanza added 11.

The Lady Falcons improved their record to 3-2 and moved to third spot behind idle leader La Salle (5-0) and second-running Ateneo (4-0).

The Tigresses suffered their fourth straight defeat and hold a 1-4 win-loss card, just one notch above cellar-dwelling University of the East (0-5).

“Maganda ang Pasko,” said Adamson coach Sherwin Meneses. “Nakuha namin ang break sa bandang huli kasi match naman ang game. At least kami nakabawi kami sa tatlong sunod na panalo.”

“Buti na lang nakapag-adjust ’yung team namin. Hindi rin naman kasi basta-basta ang UST kasi malalaki tapos nagpasok ng hindi ganoon kalaki pero malaking tulong sa kanila. Buti naka-adjust kami doon sa third and fourth set,” said Meneses.

UST gave Adamson a scare in the second set, when rookies EJ Laure and Cherry Rondina worked to even the match at a set apiece.

The Tigresses recovered from a sluggish opening set and led by as many as seven points, 20-13.

But UST could not sustain the form in the next two sets, and Meneses noted only several individuals really helped keep the Tigresses in the match.

“Sa UST si Rondina talagang matapang maglaro kasi kita naman sa beach volley. First year pero matindi talaga,” said Meneses.

Laure scored 11 points, all from spikes, while sophomore Ria Meneses also had 11, including six block points.

Rondina came off the bench to score eight, but veteran Mela Tunay had only four points and team captain Pam Lastimosa did not score.

The tournament will resume on January 4 next year.
