UNIVERSITY of the Philippines and University of Santo Tomas shared the lead after they disposed separate foes in the UAAP Season 79 women’s beach volleyball tournament on Saturday at the MOA Sands by the Bay.
UP tandem of Diana Carlos and Arielle Estranero dominated Adamson’s Jessica Galanza and Bernadette Flora, 21-18, 21-16 early in the day before they turned back Aiko Urdas and Jasmine Nabor of National University, 21-18, 21-15.
Meanwhile, UST’s Sisi Rondina and Jem Gutierrez denied Michele Morente and Kim Gequillana of Ateneo in the morning, 21-10, 21-15 and University of the East pair Judith Abil and Angelica Dacaymat, 21-12, 21-9.
In the other matches, defending champion La Salle, Ateneo, NU and Far Eastern University are on a four-way tie at 1-1.
Desiree Cheng and Ernestine Tiamzon came from a set down to turn back FEU, 19-21, 21-15, 15-11, but bowed to UP, 21-17, 21-15.
Ateneo started the day flat but recovered at the expense of NU, 26-24, 21-16. The Lady Bulldogs, however, booked an early win against UE, 17-21, 21-9, 15-9, and FEU downed Adamson, 21-16, 21-13.
