UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas sophomore spiker Cherry Rondina led all scorers at the end of the first round of eliminations, but she was quick to insist that her focus is not on chasing individual awards but on improving her team's chances in the UAAP Season 78 women’s volleyball tournament.
The Cebuana hotshot tallied a total of 129 points in seven matches in the first round, and added 12 more when the Tigresses disposed of University of the East, 25-17, 25-23, 25-16, to start the second round on Saturday at The Arena in San Juan.
Rondina eclipsed back-to-back MVP Alyssa Valdez, who’s in the fourth spot with 113 points in seven matches, while Adamson stunner Jessica Galanza is second (118), followed by second-year Far Eastern University volleybelle Toni Basas (116) and UST skipper EJ Laure (106).
But this feat is not a big deal for the 19-year old spiker.
“Sa akin po iniisip ko ‘yung team talaga. Sa amin kasi, mag-start kami sa second round na maganda,” she said.

The pint-sized volleybelle also pointed out that their team still has many things they need to improve on, especially after trailing early in their match against the winless Lady Warriors.
“Though hindi masyadong maganda ang laro namin kanina, iwo-workout talaga namin ibalik ‘yung laro talaga namin na, sabihin na nating, idiretso na, parang ipanalo kaagad,” she said.
