[EDITOR'S NOTE: Here's the fifth of our eight-part preview on the coming UAAP women's volleyball season]
FOR new University of the Philippines coach Godfrey Okumu, turning the Lady Maroons into stronger contender in the UAAP Season 80 women’s volleyball tournament starts with the small details.
The newly appointed UP mentor stressed that he won’t impose a new system or a new style of play. Instead, he will just polish the team’s strong points and work on the weaknesses.
“I’m not trying to change the way they play, what I’m trying to do is to improve whatever they had,” he said.
“So that you can make it faster and if they can spike then you spike stronger, if they can pass they should pass better,” he added.
Okumu, who replaced Jerry Yee last November, is optimistic the work they do on the small details leads to a big achievement.
As of now, the big target for the Lady Maroons is reaching the Final Four.
“So everything I’m trying to improve - speed, power and accuracy - otherwise it’s the same team,” he said.
“So I hope by changing the speed, they way they pass, the way they spike, improving their power, I think we will get somewhere,” he added.
UP will face University of the East on Sunday at the Mall of Asia Arena.
