UST’s Requinton, Varga sweep opening-day matches in UAAP beach volley

JARON Requinton and Rancel Varga of University of Sto. Tomas swept their first two assignments in the UAAP Beach Volleyball Tournament on Sunday at Sands SM By The Bay.

Requinton is looking to bag a second straight title after winning last year with Krung Arbasto.

Requinton and Varga overcame National University's James Natividad and James Buytrago, 21-15, 18-21, 16-14, before beating University of the East's Jake Abria and Lloyd Josafat, 21-10, 21-18.

"Konting kilala pa po sa isa't isa. First time ko siyang partner kasi usually si Efraim Dimaculangan ang partner. Konting adjustment sa pa sa court," said last year’s top rookie.

Last season’s runners-up Jude Garcia and Kevin Hadlocon of Far Eastern University also swept their first two matches to tie UST for the lead.

Garcia and Hadlocon took down Adamson University's Leo Miranda and Jesus Valdez, 21-17, 21-13, before edging University of the Philippines' Niccolo Consuelo and rookie Louis Gamban, 21-13, 15-21, 15-12.

NU bounced back with a 21-17, 22-20 victory over Ateneo's Abai Llenos and Kurt Aguilar, while Adamson‘s Miranda and Valdez also evened their record to 1-1 with a 21-13, 18-21, 15-7 decision over La Salle's Vince Maglinao and Ian Jumandos.

UE and UP also hold 1-1 cards.

Red Warriors Abria and Josafat nipped Ateneo's Llenos and Aguilar, 21-11, 12-21, 15-11, while Maroons Consuelo and Gamban outlasted La Salle's Maglinao and Jumandos, 21-18, 14-21, 15-13.
