ATENEO de Manila ended Far Eastern University’s seven-game winning streak as the Blue Eagles started the second round with a 31-29, 22-25, 25-23, 26-24 victory on Wednesday in the UAAP Season 81 volleyball tournament at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
Ron Medalla scored a career-best 32 points built on 27 kills, three kill blocks and two aces.
Tony Koyfman had 21 points, delivering back-to-back clutch hits in the fourth set that erased a 23-24 deficit to reach match point, 25-24, before FEU committed the crucial miscue that allowed Ateneo to secure the win.
The Eagles improved its win-loss record to 5-3.
John Rivera had 13 points and made 32 excellent receptions and 11 digs, while Lawrence Magadia dished out 43 excellent sets.
Jude Garcia led the Tamaraws with 19 points.
Richard Solis and Redijohn Paler had 15 hits each, while JP Bugaoan added 11.
FEU now shares the top spot with defending champion National University.
The Bulldogs made short work of Adamson Falcons, 25-18, 25-18, 25-19, for their seventh win in a row.
Bryan Bagunas had 26 points off 19 kills, five aces and a kill block, while Francis Saura added 11 points for NU.
Leo Miranda was the lone Falcon in double figures with 11 points, while Paolo Pablico was limited to just nine markers as Adamson dropped to 4-4.
