FAR Eastern University stunned defending champion National University, 25-12, 25-18, 25-17, in the opener of UAAP Season 81 volleyball tournament on Saturday at the Arena in San Juan.
It only took 70 minutes for the Tamaraws to stop the Bulldogs, who committed 32 errors against nine FEU miscues.
Richard Solis led the Tamaraws with nine points, Mark Calado and Jude Garcia chipped in eight points each, while Peter Quiel added seven markers.
“Siyempre yung dedication and willingness ng mga players kasi right from the start naman hindi lang kami nagpunta rito to just to represent, pumunta kami rito mayroon kaming goal,” FEU coach Rey Diaz said. “Good to see na ang mga players napakasarap kasama sa court kasi naka-focus sila sa goal na gusto nilang makuha.”
Bryan Bagunas led NU with 15 points, while rookie Joshua Retamar had 18 excellent sets.
University of the East, meanwhile, scored a 20-25, 25-10, 25-22, 25-21, victory over University of the Philippines.
Clifford Inoferio showed the way for the Red Warriors with 14 points off 12 attacks as UE scored its first win since Season 79 against Adamson. Lloyd Josafat delivered 13 hits, while Aljhon Abalon and Geric Ortega added 10 each.
“Sabi namin na panghahawakan talaga namin 'yung pride namin this season. Gusto lang namin suklian 'yung binibigay sa amin ng school,” new UE coach Victor Turing IV said.
UE will take on NU on Saturday next week.
John Mark Millete scored 17 and Brylle Consuelo added 12 points for the Maroons, who try to bounce back against FEU on Wednesday.
