UNIVERSITY of Sto. Tomas’ Krung Arbasto and Jaron Requinton dethroned National University’s Bryan Bagunas and James Natividad, 24-22, 21-15, on Saturday to advance to the finals of UAAP Season 81 beach volleyball tournament at the Sands by the Bay in Pasay City.
Graduating Arbasto and rookie partner Requinton held a twice-to-beat advantage in the last phase of the stepladder semifinals but needed about an hour to dispose of last year’s champions and reach the championship round for the sixth straight time.
Arbasto and Requinton will battle the unbeaten Far Eastern University tandem of Jude Garcia and Kevin Hadlocon in the best of three finals starting Sunday starting at 8 a.m.
“Ang saya namin kasi sa game na ‘to sila talaga ‘yung pinaghahandaan hindi namin expect na ganun ‘yung outcome,” said Arbasto, who dedicated the win to his partner last year KR Guzman.
“Para sa senior namin si KR na gusto ko ibawi yung talo na kalaban ang NU para sa kanya,” he said.
Rookie Requinton was glad to help his graduating partner Arbasto to reach his fourth finals appearance.
“Para po sa akin achievement ko po yun kasi na-remain pa rin kami sa finals kahit na senior-rookie kami sa loob ng court ang sarap sa feeling na bago po ako,“ he said.
“Super saya kasi nakapagcontribute ako sa kanya tapos naibalik sa finals at the same time ‘yung kalaban namin ‘yun ‘yung kalaban nila sa finals last year. Iba sa feeling unexplainable sa akin kasi iba ‘yung nararamdaman ko nung nanalo kami kanina.”
Bagunas and Natividad, who also lost to UST in their last elimination-round match, eliminated Adamson’s Jesus Valdez and Paolo Pablico in the first phase of the stepladder.
