KRUNG Arbasto and Jaron Requinton of University of Sto. Tomas swept erstwhile unbeaten Jude Garcia, Kevin Hadlocon and substitute Richard Solis of Far Eastern University in the UAAP Season 81 beach volleyball finals on Sunday at the Sands by the Bay in Pasay City.
Sisi Rondina, meanwhile, completed a women’s beach volley three-peat, winning with new partner Babylove Barbon in the women’s final against La Salle’s Michelle Morente and Tin Tiamzon.
Brimming with confidence from a huge semis win over last year’s champions Bryan Bagunas and James Natividad of National University, Arbasto and Requinton stunned Garcia and Hadlocon in the opener of the best-of-three title series, 21-14, 21-16.
FEU had Solis replace Hadlocon in the second match and did a little better, but still bowed to UST, 21-13, 22-24, 15-10.
Arbasto and Requinton delivered UST’s second title in three seasons by stopping an FEU team that reached the finals unbeaten.
Rondina and Barbon completed a nine-match sweep, as UST clinched its fourth women’s title in five seasons.
UST won the opening match, 21-12, 21-19, and claimed the title with a 21-7, 21-16 victory.
Rondina won her fourth Most Valuable Player award, while Babylove Barbon, her fourth partner in five seasons, was hailed as the Rookie of the Year.
"For you to prove yourself na kaya mo, why not?," Rondina said. "Nag-start ako ng first year parang alam ko sa sarili ko na wala pang napapatunayan kasi ganito lang, maliit lang ako. Pero the time na nananalo kami, puwede pala. Bonus na itong MVP. Ang goal ko lang talaga manalo at makapagbigay para sa UST."
Barbon had mixed emotions in helping Rondina achieve a fitting end to her amazing five-year career.
“Halong saya tsaka lungkot kasi yun nga po last playing year na ni Ate Sisi,” the rookie said. “Sobrang laki po nito para sa akin kasi hindi naman lahat nabibigyan ng ganitong chance para makapaglaro lalong lalo na nabigyan ka ng award.”
