FAR Eastern University completed a first-round sweep with a 25-21, 25-20, 25-18 victory over La Salle on Saturday in the UAAP Season 81 volleyball tournament at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
The Tamaraws ended the first round with a 7-0 win-loss record.
John Paul Bugaoan led the charge for FEU with 16 points off 11 attacks, four blocks and a service ace, while Jude Garcia scattered seven kills, three aces and two blocks for 12 points to go with 17 excellent receptions and five digs.
It was a quick win in an hour and 20 minutes, but FEU head coach Rey Diaz downplayed the feat.
"Ang naging maganda sa team is 'yung composure and teamwork. Iba rin 'yung eagerness ng team, coaches, and supporters," Diaz said. “Actually magsi-set nga kami ng meeting pa ngayon with our adviser kasi ayoko na maging relax ang bawat isa. Kailangan wag namin tingnan ang 7-0,” he added.
Cris Dumago scored nine and JD Delos Reyes had eight points for La Salle, which finished the first round with a 2-5 slate.
Defending champion National University, meanwhile, made short work of Ateneo 25-19, 25-23, 25-16.
Season 80 Finals Most Valuable Player Bryan Bagunas led the way with 20 points, while rookie Nico Almendras delivered 11 points as the Bulldogs cruised to their sixth straight win after an opening-day loss.
NU head coach Dante Alinsunurin was pleased to get the win, even as he rued the team’s 31 errors against Ateneo’s 20.
"Problema namin nagbigay kami ng unforced errors kaya nakakadikit sa amin 'yung kalaban. Kailangan naka-focus lagi," Alinsunurin said. “Importante sa amin every game kasi kailangan namin ma-gauge kung nasaan na 'yung team namin. Minsan may game kami na marami talagang error, pero okay na din na nakikita na namin ngayon 'yun."
Nobody scored in double figures for the Blue Eagles with Tony Koyfman having the highest output of seven points. Ateneo ended the first round with a 4-3 card.
