UNDEFEATED Ateneo hopes to end the year on a winning note as the Lade Eagles face skidding University of Santo Tomas in the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan on Saturday.
The 4 p.m. match against the Tigresses will be the final game of the defending champions this year as the Lady Eagles are set to leave for Palembang, Indonesia on Sunday to represent the country in the 17th ASEAN University Games.
Alyssa Valdez and the Lady Eagles are currently on top of the standings with a 3-0 record in a tie with old rival La Salle.
UST meanwhile, is on a four-way logjam at no. 4 along with University of the Philippines, Adamson, and National University (1-2).
After an easy season opener win over University of the East, the Tigresses absorbed back-to-back losses at the hands of the Lady Spikers and Lady Maroons, respectively.
UST will again rely on rookie sensation EJ Laure, while veterans Mela Tunay, Jessey de Leon, skipper Pam Lastimosa, and sophomore Ria Meneses need to step up their game a bit more to prevent the Espana-based squad from absorbing a third straight setback.
In the first game, UP tangles with La Salle at 2p.m.
Fresh from their 26-24, 23-25, 25-20, 25-17, conquest of the Tigresses, the Lady Maroons are expected to give the undefeated Lady Spikers a tough fight.
“We want to show them na ngayon naglalaro na kami kung manalo man sila ‘yun eh kasi mas malakas sila and hindi na ‘yung hindi kami lumalaban,” said UP coach Gerry Yee.
Skipper Nicole Tiamzon, last year’s best blocker Kathy Bersola, and Angeli Araneta are expected to take the lead for UP against La Salle’s dynamic duo of Ara Galang and Mika Reyes.
