FORMER national player and sports commissioner Teresita ‘Tisha’ Abundo passed away peacefully last Sunday (August 13).
She was 74.
A stunning figure at 5-foot-9, Abundo was a member of the women’s national volleyball team that competed in the Asiad in 1966 and 1970.
She also suited up in the 1967 World University Games in Tokyo and the 1974 Asian Zonal Volleyball Championships in Manila.
In 1969, Abundo was honored with a Philippine Presidential Award as ‘Most Outstanding Female National Volleyball Player.’
The Asiad veteran was a product of University of the East where she earned a degree in Bachelor of Science in Education, major in Physical Education and minor in English.

Her beauty and height also made Abundo a signature model in the 70s as a member of the famed Karilagan Arts International and modelled the works of well-known Filipino fashion designers Pitoy Moreno and Ben Farrales.
Following her volleyball career, Abundo taught at her alma mater, and later on was tapped a physical education director of the Philippine School of Business Administration (PSBA).

She became active again in Philippine sports when she was appointed commissioner of the PSC in 1998, with the late Butch Tuason as chairman.
Abundo also became the driving force behind the establishment of the National Capital Region Athletic Association (NCRAA), the Federation of School Sports Association of the Philippines (FESSAP), Alaska Power Camp, the Petron Beach Volleyball tournament, among other events.
