THE Philippines’ Maru Banaticla and Judy Caballejo, made short work of Malaysia-2, 21-13, 21-11, and secure a quarterfinal berth in the 2nd Asian University Beach Volleyball Championship in Cha-Am, Thailand on Thursday.
Banaticla and Caballejo, mainstays of back-to-back UAAP women’s beach volley champion University of Santo Tomas, finished second in their group with a 3-1 record behind Thailand-1, which completed a four-game sweep of its elimination assignments.
The duo now clash with dangerous Kazakhstan at the start of the knockout rounds.
The Philippines made it a double, as Jennifer Manzano and Monique Tiangco also made it to the quarters.
Manzano and Tiangco, a last-minute replacement for Cindy Benitez, defeated Syria in straight sets late Wednesday to wound up their group assignments in second place with a 2-1 card.
