UNIVERSITY of the Philippines halted a two-match skid as it turned back Adamson University, 25-27, 25-14, 25-12, 25-21 on Sunday in the UAAP Season 81 women’s volleyball tournament at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
The Lady Maroons, who suffered back-to-back defeats to Ateneo and National University, looked to be in trouble once more as the cellar-dwelling Lady Falcons stole the opening set.
But the Tots Carlos-led squad regained their composure to win in four and end the first round of eliminations with a 4-3 record, good for a share of fourth place with Far Eastern University.
Lady Maroons coach Godfrey Okumu, however, was not happy with their lack of finishing touches in the first set, where they squandered a 22-18 lead.
“Still, our finishing, it's not up to the standard that we want it to be,” Okumu said. “That's why we couldn't manage to get the first set. We led well, and the fourth set was also a little challenging. But, we managed to finish well.“
Tots Carlos and Isa Molde scored 14 points each while graduating setter Ayel Estrañero had 28 excellent receptions on top of 11 digs and four points.
Carlos also protected the floor with 26 digs. Marist Layug chipped in 11 points including the game-clinching off-speed hit while Justine Dorog added nine markers to go with 19 digs.
Joy Dacoron led the Lady Falcons with 15 points. Eli Soyud had 10 points, while Flora and Permentilla added nine and eight, respectively as Adamson lost for the sixth time in seven games.
Adamson committed 34 errors to the 19 of UP.
