Top UST Tigresses blocker Ria Meneses frustrated by dismal play, lack of confidence

    Mar 5, 2016
Ria Meneses has struggled to regain top form this season.

UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas middle blocker Ria Meneses admitted frustration as she struggles to regain her old form and make her presence felt in the UAAP Season 78 women’s volleyball tournament.

Last year’s top middle blocker was nowhere in the top 10 best blockers at the end of the first round of eliminations.

Meneses, niece of PBA great and now Jose Rizal U coach Vergel Meneses, said he can only blame herself.

“Frustrated kasi ako sa sarili ko, parang ang kalaban ko sarili ko lang din so ‘yung laro ko minsan ok, minsan talaga wala,” she said after UST defeated University of the East, 25-17, 25-23, 25-16, on Saturday at The Arena in San Juan.

Meneses finished with six points, on one spike, two blocks and three service aces, against the Lady Warriors.

UST coach Kungfu Reyes believes that Meneses’ problem is more psychological than physical.

The third-year UST stalwart underwent a right knee surgery on her tore patellar tendon after her stint with the Philippine team in the Asian Under-23 Women’s Championship in May last year.

“More on psychological na ngayon pinipilit namin siyang tulungan kaya kami nandito to guide her,” said Reyes, who pushes Meneses to rise above the challenge.

Meneses, for her part, admitted it might take a little while before she gets back her top form.

“Nagdo-double time ako, nagte-training ako mag-isa, nagwe-weights kapag may time, tapos kung saan talaga ang kulang ko doon ako nagfo-focus,” she said.

The soft-spoken middle blocker, however, is optimistic that her team can win with or without her on the court.
