FAR Eastern University’s Toni Rose Basas has been ruled out for the UAAP Season 81 women’s volleyball tournament because of a shoulder injury.
FEU head coach George Pascua confirmed to Spin.ph that Basas, a key player in FEU’s silver medal run in UAAP Season 80, has not recovered from a right shoulder injury sustained before the Philippine Superliga All-Filipino Conference last year while lined up for club Sta. Lucia.
“We decided na pagaling muna yung injury niya, talagang No. 1 priority para makabalik siya,” Pascua told Spin.ph during the team practice on Monday at the FEU Gym. “For me kasi, logically, ayoko palaruin siya ng hindi siya fit kasi kawawa naman yung bata.”
“It’s too late na talaga kasi one month na lang kasi ang strengthening kasi it takes three months bago siya maging fully recovered.”
Basas missed the Premier Volleyball League Collegiate Conference as she underwent a procedure to for an ear infection, but FEU still went on to place second to University of the Philippines. Basas planned to return to action in the PSL but suffered the shoulder injury.
Pascua is hoping Basas will still play for FEU next season.
“Ngayon siguro kung makadecide na next year meron pa naman siyang playing year pero so far this season fifty, fifty pa rin siya,” he said. “Sabi ko nga sa kanya lahat open windows, doors. Open para sa kanya.”
Pascua is hoping rookie Lycha Ebon can fill Basas’ shoes and help senior players Jerrili Malabanan, Kyle Negrito and Heather Guino-o pull the team back to the finals.
