UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas overcame a second-set scare to turn back Letran 25-16, 25-23, 25-20, on Thursday in the 19th Shakey's V-League First Conference at the Arena in San Juan.
The Lady Knights took a 22-19 lead in the second but the Tigresses woke up and sealed the set with a 5-1 run.
The third set was a little more comfortable for the Tigresses, and Maika Ortiz put an exclamation point to the game with a running spike to capture the win.
The Tigresses ended the eliminations with a 3-1 win-loss card, second to defending champion Ateneo with a 4-0 slate in the Group A. Letran bowed out of the tournament winless in four matches.
"Medyo nag je-jell na ang mga bata ngayon, bumalik na ang connection ni Aiza (Maizo) at Rhea (Dimaculangan)," said UST coach Odjie Mamon of his two guest players, who won the championship with the Tigresses in 2010 First Conference.
Aiza Maizo had 16 points, while Ortiz added 14 and Pamela Lastimosa produced 10 for UST.
"Maganda din ang block nila kanina kaya controlled din ang situation ng game," added Mamon of UST's eight blocks compared to Letran's five.
Thai reinforcement Patcharee Sangmuang finished with 13 markers for the Lady Knights.
La Salle-Dasmariñas (1-2) and San Sebastian College (1-2) also advanced from Group A.
