UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas and National University fight for survival and the right to advance to the Final Four of the 75th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament when they clash Wednesday at The Arena in San Juan.
The Tigresses are coming off a disappointing 26-28, 15-25, 22-25 loss to Ateneo last Sunday that relegated them to a sudden-death match with the Lady Bulldogs.
Winner of the 2 p.m. encounter will face the Lady Eagles in the semifinals, where the Katipunan-based squad enjoys a twice-to-beat edge for finishing second at the end of the eliminations.
“Nasa kamay pa din naman nila (players) kung papasok kami,” said UST coach Odjie Mamon.
Both UST and NU finished the eliminations with similar 8-6 (win-loss) records, although the Lady Tigers won their last match-up against the Lady Bulldogs, 25-21, 25-21, 23-25, 25-17, in game played in front of a huge crowd of 19,638 at the Mall of Asia Arena.
For the Tigresses to advance, Mamon said his team will have to even do better than that.
“Advantage na nanalo kami sa kanila (sa MOA Arena), pero sa do-or-die ire-refine pa namin (ang plays) madami pa kasing lapses,” added Mamon.
With no less than the last Final Four berth at stake, the Lady Bulldogs vow not to waste any more chance at getting back at their many-time tormentors.
“Ilang beses na kami natalo sa UST, ayaw ko na maulit na matalo nila kami. Paghahandaan talaga namin sila,” said senior spiker Cai Nepomuceno.
