UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas turned back National University, 25-21, 25-21, 23-25, 25-17, on Saturday to grab solo fourth spot in the 75th UAAP season women's volleyball tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena.
The Lady Bulldogs came charging in the third set, scoring five straight points to snatch the lead, 24-22, then held on to take the set and extend the first ever women’s volleyball match at the MOA Arena.
NU kept pace with the Tigresses until midway through the fourth set, when the Tigresses broke loose from 16-15 to seal the win.
Jesse de Leon scored on back-to-back attacks to spark UST's offense, taking the win on a Judy Caballejo hit down the line.
"Pinaghandaan talaga namin kasi three losses kami sa first round at ang target namin for the second round we need to win two games sa last three games, including this," said UST coach Odjie Mamon.
Maika Ortiz led the Tigresses with 15 points, while team captain Caballejo came through with 14 markers and Carmela Tunay had 12.
"Sobrang gusto namin manalo at saka makapasok sa top four," said Caballejo.
"Noong una kinabahan kami kasi home court nila pero medyo sanay na din kami sa dami ng tao kaya ok na lang," added the UST skipper.
The Tigresses improved to a 7-5 record and grabbed solo fourth spot.
Santiago finished with 22 points for National U, from 13 attacks and nine blocks. Myla Pablo and Aiko Urdas chipped in 15 and 10 markers apiece for NU, which dropped to sixth spot with a 6-6 win-loss card.
