BINAN, Laguna — Thailand advanced to the semifinals as it sent Philippines crashing back to earth with a 25-21, 25-14, 25-20 victory in the 19th AVC Asian Women’s Senior Championship on Tuesday at Alonte Sports Arena.
Ajcharaporn Kongyot and Chatchu-on Moksri scored 17 points for the Thais, while Wilavan Apinyapong added 13 in the one-hour and 20-minute match.
Thailand, the 10-time Southeast Asian Games defending champion, will face Korea in the semifinals on Wednesday.
Jovelyn Gonzaga led the Philippines with 11 points, Alyssa Valdez added nine and Jaja Santiago chipped in six.
“Minsan mananalo ka and minsan matatalo ka but it’s how you play the game,” said Philippines coach Francis Vicente.
“Nakikita ko naman andon pa rin ang puso kaya lang 'yun nag, siguro ’yung determination ganoon unit, bumibitaw. Hindi lang kayo pinalad.”
Thailand scored 46 on attacks, while the Philippines managed only 28.
Noostara Tomkom came up with all of Thailand’s 40 excellent sets, while Kim Fajardo had 15 of the Philippines’ 19 excellent sets.
The Philippines, coming off a big win over 2015 SEA Games silver medalist Vietnam, plays Chinese Taipei in the classification for fifth to eighth places.
