BIÑAN, Laguna — Thailand and Korea swept their respective pools with big wins on Friday in the 19th AVC Asian Senior Women's Volleyball Championship at Alonte Sports Arena.
Former two-time champion Thailand beat Chinese Taipei, 26-24, 25-14, 25-15, to top Pool D.
Chatchu-on Moksri led the way for the Thais with 20 points, 2013 MVP Wilawan Apinyapong added 15 and Hattaya Bamrungsuk chipped in 12.
Thailand dominated Chinese Taipei in attacks (53-31) and service aces (7-2).
Tseng Wan-Ling tallied 11 points for Chinese Taipei, which ended the pool stage with a 2-1 win-loss record and will also play in the quarterfinals.
Korea survived a late scare from Vietnam, 25-23, 25-19, 17-25, 25-22, to complete a three-match sweep of Pool C.
Yang Hyojin had 15 points for Korea, while Kim Heejin and Kim Suji added 12 markers apiece and Park Jeongah chipped in 10.
Korean star and team captain Kim Yeonkuong, who did not play in the team’s first two games, played in the third set and wound up with five points.
They Tran The Thanh scored 25 for Vietnam, while Hue Pham The Kim and skipper Hoa Nguyen Thi Ngoc had 12 points each.
Vietnam dropped to 2-1, also enough to advance to the quarterfinals.
