UNITED Volleyball Club made short work of skidding Foton, 25-18, 25-23, 25-22, on Tuesday to boost its bid for the twice-to-beat advantage for the quarterfinals in the Philippine Superliga Grand Prix at the Arena in San Juan City.

Import Yaasmeen Bedart-Ghani lifted UVC anew with 20 points, 19 coming from kills and nailed the finishing touches in the third set to dispatch the Tornadoes in straight sets in one hour and 33 minutes and improved to 6-5 win-loss record behind third and fourth placers PLDT Home Fibr and Cignal, who are tied with 7-6 win-loss records.

Team captain Kalei Mau was also instrumental with 11 points on top of nine excellent receptions, while Amy Ahomiro had six points and showed her improvement on floor defense with 13 digs filling in for other import Tai Manu-Olevau, who went home to Hawaii due to personal matters and expected to return on Thursday against PLDT.

“Very crucial game for us, especially after PLDT's loss earlier. Our standings are pretty close,” UVC head coach Joshua Ylaya said. “Credit to our team for bouncing back after our horrible loss.”

“Ang sinabi namin sa kanila na our last game, eighty percent of it was our best defensive efforts. We just had a problem closing out sets,” added Ylaya as they bounced back from a loss to Generika-Ayala last week. “Our problem was relaxing on the crucial moments. It hit us pretty bad. That's a feeling na we'd rather experience now than later. They don't want to lose like that again.”

Fil-Am setter Alohi Robins-Hardy played inspired in front of cousin and basketball star Gabe Norwood, who watched the match with his family, dishing out 27 excellent sets and scored four markers, two from service aces.

Spaniard Milagros Collar poured 19 points for Foton, while American import Courtney Felinski had 12 hits including 14 excellent receptions only for the Tornadoes to continue to reel at the bottom losing 10 straight of their 11 outings.
