THE Philippine Super Liga (PSL) is set for expansion as two to three new teams will be joining the women’s division when it kicks off its season opener on March 8.
PSL president Tats Suzara admitted that as early as November, there were already interested applicants wanting to join the fast-growing women’s volleyball league.
So far, six teams make up the league’s distaff side composed of Grand Prix champion Petron, Generika, RC Cola Air Force, Cignal HD, Foton, and Mane ‘N Tail, which will now carry the brand name Pocari Sweat.
But the expansion plan will prompt the temporary shelving of the men’s competition, which will now be limited to the league’s side event of beach volleyball.
“Mawawala muna ang men’s kasi nag-expand tayo sa women’s. Pero sa beach volleyball, may men’s (teams),” said Suzara.
The franchise expansion is just part of the innovations to be implemented in the PSL this season.
Suzara earlier announced the adoption of a video challenge to review close calls this season, the holding of a beach volleyball during the off season, and the staging of the Champion’s League featuring the title holders of the UAAP, NCAA, Shakey’s V-League, and PSL.
Kicking off the 2015 season is the rookie camp set from February 24-25 before the actual Drafting on the 28th where Mane ‘N Tail takes the first pick from the expected pool of 25 to 26 players.
Deadline for submission of application for aspiring draftees is January 30.
“We’re expecting 25-26 players from the UAAP and NCAA, and maybe, galing sa probinsiya pa. Siguro they may apply directly,” said Suzara.
