TURKISH side Eczacibasi VitrA Istanbul turned back Pomi Casalmaggiore, 25-19, 20-25, 25-19, 22-25, 15-11, to retain the championahip in the FIVB Women's Club World Championship at the Mall of Asia Arena on Sunday.
Powered by six Olympians in its lineup, Eczacibasi VitrA Istanbul completed a sweep of its eight games to become the first team in the 10-year history of the Club World Championships to repeat as champion.
The Turkish team has not lost since its dropping its opening game of the 2015 edition in Zurich to Hisamitsu Springs Kobe.
Tatiana Kosheleva of Russia led the way for with 23 points, while 2016 Rio silver medalist Tijana Boskovic of Serbia added 17. Brazilian Thaisa Daher Pallesi added 10, USA national team members Jordan Larson-Burbach and Rachael Adams added 10 and six markers apiece and Serbian Maja Ognjonevic chipped in six.
Down by one, 9-10 in the fifth set, Eczacibasi Vitra Istanbul turned it around, 12-10 after Adams blocked Lucia Bosetti and Bosetti's service went out and skipper Neslihan Demir scored on a service ace.
Carli Lloyd stopped the bleeding for Pomi Casalmaggiore with a drop shot but Eczacibasi Vitra Istanbul finished on a 3-0 spurt capped by Kosheleva's service ace to retain the championship.
Samantha Fabris finished with 22 points and skipper Natalya Tirozzi had 11 for Pomi Cadalmaggiore, which reached the finals in its debut in the tournament.
