KRISTY Jaeckel scored a league record 40 points as Mane ’N Tail scored its first win in the Super Liga Grand Prix, downing winless Foton, 25-22, 17-25, 22-25, 25-18, 15-6, on Wednesday at the Cuneta Astrodome.
The former University of Florida star unloaded 32 spikes and also scored on four blocks and four service aces, while American setter Kaylee Manns added 11 as Mane ’N Tail won after two successive losses.
Jaeckel had matched the previous league high of 37 points against Petron over the weekend in Santo Domingo in Ilocos Sur, and a week ago the 25-year old spiker scored 31 against Cignal.
A new league record helped Mane ’N Tail post its first ever win in the league, but Jaeckel deflected the credit to Manns, who had all but one of the team's 39 excellent sets, and Lea Ancepcion for her nine digs in a match that took an hour and 50 minutes.
“It’s a team effort, Kaylee was giving me sets and kudos to the libero for being aggressive, I can’t get points without my team,” she said.
Interestingly, Mane ’N Tail coach Francis Vicente said the gameplan was for the local players to step up and not only rely on the imports.
“I told them (locals) that they should participate, work with Kristy and Kaylee, if they work together we will have much better defense, receive and offense," said Vicente.
The veteran mentor added they took Foton lightly at the start of the match.
“Overconfident kami nilaro lang namin ang kalaban, sa fifth set nagkalabasan ng tunay na laro and that’s the way we should play,” he said.
Mane ’N Tail took control of the fifth set as they went with a 5-0 spurt to leave behind the Tornadoes, 9-2.
Jaeckel sparked another 5-1 run to put Mane ’N Tail at match point, 14-5.
Irina Tarasova had 29 points, while Elena Tarasova added 15 as the Tornadoes remained winless in two outings and joined Generika at the bottom.
