RACHEL Ann Daquis showed nerves of steel in crucial situations, earning Player of the Week honors in the Philippine Super Liga All Filipino Conference.
The 5-foot-10 stunner from Far Eastern University provided the solid presence Petron badly needed as it struggled to put away pesky Mane ‘N Tail on Saturday.
She scored the match-clinching hit to help the Blaze Spikers eke out a pulsating 25-27, 25-22, 25-16, 17-25, 16-14 win at the Cuneta Astrome.
After breaking the 13-all deadlock, Daquis had the presence of mind to drop the ball in front of shorter defender Arianne Argarin to seal the Blaze Spikers' fifth consecutive victory and a clean sweep of the first round of eliminations.
"Yun talaga ang inaasahan namin sa kanya nung kinuha namin sya, yung maturity nya sa game," said Petron coach George Pascua.
"Dun sa mga ganung sitwasyon, dun mo sya maasahan sa decision-making, nakita nya na yung maliit na setter ang nasa harap so dun sya nag drop," added Pascua.
Daquis finished with 14 kills for a total of 16 points, while providing a lot of intangibles that do not reflect in the stat sheet.
The former Queen Tamaraw was picked by sportswriters covering the event over her teammates Aby Marano and Dindin Santiago, who eruped for a conference-high 30 points in overcoming Mane ‘N Tail.
