PETRON kept their record unblemished but not before a huge scare as the Blaze Spikers edged Cignal HD, 25-18, 25-12, 18-25, 16-25, 16-14, on Friday in the Philippine Super Liga Grand Prix at the Cuneta Astrodome.
Dindin Santiago showed the way, scoring 23 points as the Blaze Spikers scored their sixth victory. Mina Aganon and Frances Molina had 16 points apiece and American import Alaina Bergsma chipped in with 15.
The HD Lady Spikers dropped to third spot with a 3-3 win-loss card.
Both teams began to tire in the final set, and the match ended with teams surrendering points through errors.
Tied at 13 in the fifth, the Blaze Spikers reached match point via a net violation by the HD Lady Spikers. But Aganon returned the favor with a service miscue that made it 14-all.
Cherry Mae Vivas and Lindsay Stalzer each had a service fault and an attack error to hand Petron a win that coach George Pascua didn’t feel like celebrating.
"Hindi namin ma-over come ang errors namin. Buti na lang 'yung kalaban ganoon rin ang nagyari," said Pascua, whose team actually had 28 errors, two more than Cignal.
“Another responsibility na naman 'yan (six straight wins) mahirap mag maintain ng ganyang nasa taas ka,” he said.
Petron led by as many as 13 for a quick second set win, couldn’t finish it in three and allowed Cignal to fight back.
“Nawalan na naman kami ng receive kaya hindi ma-execute ang plays tapos nag relax pa kala nila hindi lalaban ’yung Cignal kasi malayo naman ang lamang," he added.
Stalzer and Sarah Ammerman scored 27 and 17 points, respectively, while skipper Honey Royse Tubino contributed 13 for Cignal.
