PETRON was dragged into a tight match early by RC Cola Air Force but the Blaze Spikers managed to break down the Raiders’ defense, scoring a 28-30, 25-23, 25-16, 25-19 win on Wednesday to keep their record unblemished in the Philippine Super Liga Grand Prix at the Cuneta Astrodome.
The first set took over half an hour to finish and RC Cola managed to keep it close in the second before Petron evened the match. Blaze Spikers coach George Pascua made adjustments on defense and the next two sets were more comfortable en route to their fourth win.
The Blaze Spikers limited the Raiders’ American reinforcements Emily Brown and Bonita Wise to just 14 points apiece. Brown scored 22 in their previous match against Generika.
“Tinarget namin ang defense ni Emily Brown para ma-out of timing siya sa attack, kahit papano na-utilize namin ’yun na-minimize namin ’yung attack ni Brown,” said Pascua.
Alaina Bergsma scored 26 points, including a back row attack that ended the match. The former Miss Oregon now has a total of 97 points in 15 sets played.
Dindin Santiago finished with 17 markers, while Mina Aganon, Frances Molina and Brazilian setter Erica Adachi chipped in 10 points each for Petron.
Maika Ortiz added in 12 for RC Cola Air Force.
Petron also scored 11 on blocks against seven by RC Cola.
"Naging organized din ang blocking namin kaya mas napadali rin ang pag depensa ni Jen (Reyes) sa likod," said Pascua.
The Raiders dropped to third spot with an even record of 2-2, next to Cignal at 2-1.
