GENERIKA pulled off a huge surprise, scoring a quick 25-23, 25-18, 25-20 win over Cignal on Wednesday in the Philippine Super Liga Grand Prix at the Cuneta Astrodome.
Russian import Natalia Korobkova led the way with 17 points, 11 on spikes, while Life Savers skipper Cha Cruz delivered eight markers.
Aby Marano, Paneng Mercado and Japanese setter Miyu Shinohara combined for 20 points as Generika bounced back from a loss to Mane ‘N Tail and improved its win-loss record to 2-3.
“Ang sabi ko lang sa mga players ko by hook or by crook kailangan tayo manalo. Ipakita natin sa ibang team kung ano ang kaya nating gawin,” said Generika coach Ramil de Jesus.
“Nakikita ko na ngayon ’yung confidence sa receive at sa depensa, may communication an rin sa loob ng court.”
The veteran mentor was happy to see the locals step up, including Marano and Mercado who can now focus with Generika’s campaign after their stint with Meralco in the V-League.
“At least ngayon nakakapag concentrate na sila sa team kasi tapos na sa kabila, sila kasi ang core ng team,” he said.
Generika led by as many as 12 points, 14-2, and quickly finished the second set, but had to fight from 6-10 in the third.
Shinohara sparked an 8-3 run that put the Life Savers ahead, 14-13. Cignal kept it close, 18-all but Marano and Mercado worked together for a 4-0 spurt, including two service aces from Marano, for a 22-18 breather.
Lindsay Stalzer poured in 24 points, while Sarah Ammerman added 10 as the HD Lady Spikers suffered their second loss in five matches.
